Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world due to climate change. Millions of people of this country have faced severe natural disasters like cyclone, flood, tidal surge, lightning, heat and drought at various times. Many coastal areas may get flooded as a result of the sea level rising. However, we have just a small influence on this risk. Planting trees is the best way to defend our country and ourselves. There is no better way to prevent global warming than planting trees. In a report published in 2018, the United Nations said, “Carbon-dioxide gas must be removed from the atmosphere to keep the global temperature increase below 1.50C” by 2030, the global carbon emission limits will have been exceeded at the current rate of carbon emissions. This will make it impossible to maintain global warming below 1.50C over the long term. Therefore, there is no other way to reduce CO2 than planting trees. With that objective in mind, the WASH4 Urban Poor Phase-II project, run by the non-governmental organization Nabolok with technical support from the donor organization WaterAid, decided to plant trees as part of its programs to address the risks of climate change. It should also be noted that the WASH4 Urban Poor Phase-II project does not directly deal with climate change risk issues. But, in order to implement this idea, Nabolok and WaterAid staff met the nursery owners’ association during the Divisional Plantation fair (Brikkho Mela) at Khulna City. Badrul Alam Royal, president of the Nursery Owners Association, promised to offer trees at a reasonable cost. A voluntary organization ‘Alo’ has come forward to pay for the purchase of this tree. They provided oxygen to people, educational support, medical support during the Covid period, currently they are involved in various voluntary service works. For this, trees are planted in various secondary and higher secondary schools located in Khulna City Corporation Area. Sustainability of the trees has been given the utmost attention in this case, and the school administration has been informed of the importance of preserving the growth of trees. The activities of Alo, Nursery Owners Association, Nabolok, WaterAid have been fully supported by Thana Secondary Education Officers and District Secondary Education Officers of Khulna district. Under this program, 135 medicinal, fruit and forest trees including various almost extinct plants have been planted in 11 schools of Khulna city so far.
